Something's wrong with the video card fan. It's starting to rev up like a motorcycle. Vroom, vrooom!
No Quake Wars for me for the time being. :(
I walked into a Best Buy today and ended up walking out with a pretty decent computer for ridiculously cheap. I haven't owned a pre-built system in years, prefer putting one together myself, but this was an impulse buy on a good deal. It's a Compaq SR1650NX with an AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 1GB RAM and a 250GB HD. The computer was on clearance and I managed to talk the manager into giving it to me for $350!
It also comes with Windows XP Media Center Edition, which is kind of neat. I'm currently trying to get rid of the bloatware that typically comes with these machines. I've been trying to get a Linux box for some time, so I'll be dual booting.
Edit: Lucky me, I managed to snag another deal. Just ordered an nVidia 7600GT GPU for $130... that's half price!
SLi? Crossfire? How about nVidia's new Quadro Plex?
The nVidia Quadro FX GPU is a top of the line graphic card typically used by 3D graphic professionals. The unit on the left is a Quadro Plex multi-core unit of 8 nVidia Quadro FX cards. The image on the right is a rackmount of 16 Quadro Plex units, totaling 128 GPU's! A single Quadro Plex unit retails for $17,500.
In case you're wondering... yes, it does run Quake 4.
Don't you like that nice new clean format feeling? It's been about two years, but after backing everything up onto a spare, I've finally decided to wipe my hard drive clean and reinstall from scratch. It's another one of those quirks with Windows where things start to decay over time, so you have to do a good thorough cleaning every couple of years. Good thing is, I've managed to get rid of all the junk and apps that I never use, while updating a bunch of software/drivers I didn't even know were outdated. I kinda want a MacBook Pro now for many reasons .
Lately, I've been working in Illustrator for vector graphic prints. I've been checking out the work of Jason Brooks (known for his hed kandi album covers) and fellow Torontonian artist Marcos Chin (known for his lavalife ad illustrations) for inspiration.
Currently, I'm hard at work on a print design project that I'd like to call "combustion". Think warm hues, stylised flames, and hot, hot, hot.
I wonder what terrible thing I did recently to deserve such bad Karma.
Looks
like nothing is working right recently, the number of things breaking
down is quite staggering. I'm usually a little overprotective over the condition of all my stuff and rarely have any issues, but lately, it's a very different story.
My motherboard has been out of commission after I discovered that the SATA controller was shot. Went though a nightmare RMA process for two months and I finally got a replacement unit from Asus (not to blame them, just awful bad luck).
Went on a charity bike ride downtown for the weekend and came home Monday to find that the subwoofer unit on my PC speakers just crapped out. 6 months old, worked fine before the weekend. Now I'm desperately looking for the receipt, which I always file away, but I just can't seem to find.
This afternoon, I noticed that my Internet connection was down for whatever reason. Checked on the wireless router to find none of the normally blinking lights blinking. Turned out the router's power brick just kicked the bucket. How often do AC adapters fizzle out? Thankfully, I had a spare.
Fridge has been temperamental for quite some time. It seems to build up a lot of condensation inside so that I get puddles, then sometimes freezes it all up. I find soggy bread and frozen vegetables in there all the time.
If anything else around here breaks down, it's gonna be me.
